VIRGINIA BEACH-Cheering on her favorite baseball teams, the Memphis Redbirds and the Tidewater Tides, singing along with Britney Spears and S Club 7, and watching Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen are just some of the things that bring Suzy joy. This bright 11-year-old also delights in roller-skating, playing Nintendo, and learning history. But writing is her absolute love in life; she enjoys all writing styles and has tried her hand at all of them. Unfortunately, she must do it between hospital stays and medical treatments. Suzanne has stage four neuroblastoma, a very progressive cancer of the nervous system.
“She still needs to experience everything in life,” said her father, Jack. “We can’t put her in a bubble.” He says the family has learned to keep a positive attitude and has raised Suzanne to be independent and to want to try new things. “She’s a little fighter.” And with all the treatments she must endure, she still has to find time to do school work, keep in touch with friends by letter, and write in her journal.
And with her medical condition, it is difficult for her to do on a consistent basis. So when Wish Coordinator Melissa North of Kids Wish Network was contacted about Suzanne, she quickly developed a strategy and made Suzanne’s wish of owning a computer a dream come true. Now Suzanne will have unlimited access to write and study at the touch of a button. Not only did Kids Wish Network give her a computer, she also received a printer and Internet access for an entire year. “It’s faster than her dad’s old laptop,” said Jack. “She’s already made her friends some cards with it. She’s enjoying the computer very much.”
She may have to suffer through painful treatments and frequent visits to the doctor, but Suzanne can now spend her free time exploring the world-wide-web when she is at home and developing new plots for future stories. Now, no matter what her energy level, she can forget her problems with the click of her mouse, and feel like a typical, carefree kid.
